JDR- Business Technique. Much as one might like to see John D. Rockefeller as the arch capitalist crushing competitors as he gained monopolistic power, it's not so (at least according to the biography I read). He did indeed control much of the oil in the United States but he was fair in the prices he offered competitors he wanted to buy out and he was modest in his personal expenses and generous in his charitable contributions all his life. How he gain control He was able to price his product so low that competitors couldn't compete. They would then go out of business and/or sell to JDR.
They are called “industrial statesmen” for the great economic power they helped America become. At the same time, they are regarded as “robber barons” because they built their great wealth by abusing the system, abusing employees, and destroying their competitors to satisfy their own needs. They grew America, but brought down many on their path. Document F is concentrated on John D. Rockefeller. A great man, really, in charge of having possibly the biggest oil refinery company in the world.
By consolidating their power through deregulation and the monstrous abuses it permitted, banks became the least trusted institutions in the world. They fear no loss of respect, because their accumulated power means they can rule by sheer force. Caligula, a paragon of this ethic said “Oderint dum metuant” Let them hate, so long as they
Theodore Roosevelt stepped up and warned businesses to “act properly.” Those business elites that cooperated with the government elites were considered good trusts. Vice versa, those who didn’t were considered bad and thus busted. Business elites still won the war due to the fact that the government could only go so far until it starts to hurt the economy. Whatever happens to the big guys would have direct impacts on the little
He was a fine sailor, but was a selfish man. All he wanted was gold and to be known for it. Columbus died always thinking he traveled to India when he was always traveling to America. He was a failure and was known for being cruel. When Columbus died, no one cared for him because he proved failure instead of achievement.
Of course, those already in power bitterly resent this; that is why there is such a strong anti-democratic streak in wealthy conservatives and business owners. They complain that democracy allows the poor to legally steal from the rich. (Liberals counter that unregulated capitalism allows the rich to exploit and therefore steal from the poor, and taxes simply correct for that.) But democracy also works in the other direction as well. If we lived in a society where everyone was paid equally, despite their different inputs, people would surely vote to create a system of incentives and rewards.
White-collar individuals are usually already wealthy people who commit crime without getting their hands dirty. These types of criminals use their intelligent minds to embezzle money and get away with it. Corporations do not know that such criminals are apart of their staff. White-collar criminals are usually “well respected in their communities and take part in national affairs” (Schmalleger, 2008). Martha Stewart a businesswoman who is known for her quick tips in making peoples homes a better more stylish place was convicted of lying to investigators about a stock sale
His ability to rule with absolute power is considered to be a characteristic of fascism. Many of his critics labeled him tyrant because he acted with impunity in allocating public works and government money. Huey lacked faith that the U.S. government would act in lock step with his beliefs. On numerous occasions he bypassed state laws to implement his own action plans. He believed his plans to benefit the poor were more important than restrictions imposed by federal and state legislatures.
The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald The American Dream before World War 1 was about moral values and the pursuit of happiness. Unfortunately, the War led to an economic boom in which people bought materialistic items they would have never bought before. This caused the dream to decay and people started to believe that worldly pleasures, money and ultimately, greed was above everything else. With this economic boom, any person of any social class could become wealthy. Jay Gatsby’s need to climb the social ladder and become the romantic hero for his lost lover shows the need of wealth for people in this era.
Gatsby is careless in devoting much of his life trying to recapture his past. In F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby, careless characters make bad decisions and use their wealth and position to escape their consequences. Tom and Daisy act carelessly throughout the novel. They make careless decisions due to selfishness and drunkenness. Due to their wealth and the lifestyle they are living, they have no concept of reality.
