Definition of Individuality Individuality. Noun. According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, the word individuality means the total character peculiar to and distinguishing an individual from others. Truthfully, very few people actually know what that definition means. Individuality often correlates with the personal characteristics of a given person. A word synonymous with originality and unique, individuality often is defined by a single person based on experience and opinion, as done here. Individuality cannot be accomplished without the presence of an individual. Each person that wakes up in the morning expresses his or her own interpretation of individuality. A man named Keith may wake up in the morning wearing a t-shirt and sweatpants and stand next to his king-size bed covered in blue and green sheets and complete a morning routine, which has not failed him in 30 years. That is individuality. The way Keith walks around his room, where he puts his clothes, and the way he combs his hair are all activities unique to only him. Individuality is not a choice or a trait; it’s a habit. Individuality is as natural as a person’s true hair color. Not assigned or picked out of a bag, but instead associated with a person. Twins may be brown haired, blue eyed, six feet tall, a hundred and seventy five pounds, wearing a black t-shirt and blue jeans, and both with size thirteen Nike shoes on, but I guarantee that as they walk out the front door of their house that they walk with a different stride, tell different jokes, have different friends, like different people, and speak at different times. This is all due to individuality. The unique factor of individuality is what drives our modern day society. The individual brands promoted and created by celebrities, athletes, and millionaires alike take over the lives of the followers who only strive to be like them.
