Dear Indian boy, When I first read about you in “Indian Education” by Sherman Alexie I was very impressed. The problems you had are still evident, and people from all over the world have to struggle with them every day. I enjoyed following your life throughout your school experiences, while you were moving from grade to grade up until high school graduation. What made reading intriguing was the use of irony and humor. It indicates an excellence of form. It didn’t only make me laugh, but gave me an opportunity to learn a little bit about the culture of Native Americans. He born and grew up in an Indian reservation. He felt as if he wasn’t getting the best education he could possibly get, and decided to seek a better schooling at an off-reservation all white high school. He had to deal with a completely different culture. Even though we are amongst people with different traditions and beliefs, it is very important to stay true to who we are. Struggle for self-identity can be another concept that we can get from your story. People often have to leave behind their family and friends to seek a better life somewhere else, but they need to do everything to stay true to themselves. Sometimes people try to pretend they are something they’re not just to fit in and be accepted by society, but I am sure it makes them feel very uncomfortable. Having an accent bothered me especially when people looked down on me because I was from somewhere else. I hated the fact that I sounded different. I tried speech and diction classes, but my “R’s” never went away. After a while I realized that my accent is nothing to be ashamed of, but something to be proud of. I was able to communicate in a foreign language which was a big achievement for me, so why would I care about my accent. Even though it took me some time and effort to realize, I started to believe that my accent made me a unique, one of a kind
