Inception of Religious Extremism in Young Madrasah Students in Bangladesh

Introduction: An Islamic extremist prefers success in the life hereafter than in this life. That is why they are so reckless. That is why they are unstoppable. In their mission of establishing superiority and dominance of Islam they are acting as a catalyst for destruction all over the earth. When they strike innocent people pay with their lives. When victim governments strike back innocent people pay with their lives. This has become a pattern and essentially, the initiators are religious extremists and their terrorist activities. But who are these religious extremists? Are they not people like us? Do they not have dreams? What makes them choose death over life? Although there is no one single answer to these questions, one key factor must be emphasized: the young age of majority of these extremists. At such a young age they have so strong and firm extremist principles; this leads us to the obvious fact that they were exposed to these principles starting from their childhood. They were made to adopt these principles, they were brainwashed. These issues are the premise of this paper. Throughout the entirety of this paper, religious extremism is of central importance. Therefore, a central definition of religious extremism is termed here. Coleman and Bartoli (n.d.) provided a central definition of extremism when they stated “Most simply, it can be defined as activities (beliefs, attitudes, feelings, actions, strategies) of a character far removed from the ordinary” (p. 2). Therefore we can term extremism as deviations from the mainstream cultures, principles and beliefs of a particular society. The topic of this paper is the inception of religious extremism in young madrasah students of Bangladesh. Therefore, for the purposes of this research we define extremism as adoption of principles deviant from the mainstream ideologies of the Bangladeshi culture. Bangladesh
