According to most psychological personality theorists, personality refers to the psychological qualities attributed to individual thinking, feeling and behaviour. There are many theoretical perspectives that endeavour to explain the underlying structures and processes that contribute to an understanding of personality For example, trait, psychoanalytic, social cognitive and humanistic approaches. However, in order to address the question this essay will focus on humanistic and social cognitive approaches to personality. Thus the humanist theory of Carl Rogers will be briefly introduced. In addition the social cognitive perspective of George Kelly. His theory of personal constructs will also be briefly outlined. The similarities and differences of each approach will be evaluated to gain an insight into the main premise of these theories that emphasise the subjective view of the individual and what they contribute to an understanding of personality. The essay will conclude in suggesting that these theories offer a better and more useful insight into how people interact with the environment than some other theories, for example trait and psychoanalytic. There are many similarities between Rogers’ and Kelly’s approaches to personality. As a humanist theorist, Rogers views the individual as generally good and motivated towards personal growth, self-fulfilment and ultimately self-actualisation (like Maslow). The concept of self-actualisation suggests an innate desire to realise one’s own potential. This differs from Freud’s view of innate drives and urges. Rogers emphasises the subjective and unique experiences and perceptions of the individual and the meaning that people attach to their world. Similarly, Kelly emphasises the subjective view of the individual and the meaning they attach to the world through their personal constructs. Both theorists present a positive
