Steinbeck describes him as “prince of the ranch” and he possesses such a position due to his calm and receptive demeanour. Slim is always able to assess a situation accurately and give a judgement. His authority is proven when “Candy looked a long time at Slim to try to find some reversal. And Slim gave him none.” This implies that Slim has the authority to override the decisions of the other workers, showing he is higher in the social hierarchy and has power over the workers. Steinbeck shows Slim to be the most authoritative of the pair when he says “Slim sat down on a box and George took his place opposite.” This quote suggests that Slim is dominant because he takes his seat first; meaning that he is the more important and that George respects him.
* It is a truth universally acknowledged that a single man in possession of a good fortune must be in want of a wife. Opening line. JA * "The power of doing anything with quickness is always prized much by the possessor, and often without any attention to the imperfection of the performance." * "Mr. Wickham is blessed with such happy manners as may ensure his MAKING friends--whether he may be equally capable of RETAINING them, is less certain." * Mr. Collins was not a sensible man, and the deficiency of nature had been but little assisted by education or society .
The man knows how to handle his many wives and children, as should be done in the Ibo tribe. But Okonkwo’s family is very diverse in their work ethic, and thoughts of life. He tries to work his eldest son, so he doesn’t become like his grandfather. He is forceful with his wives so he shows them he isn’t weak. Many of the other people in the tribe work and sleep, but Okonkwo knows that only the strong of will and mind survive.
In this passage he seems to be quite a self-standing person because he owns a copy of the California civil code for 1905 so he knows what rights he has out of the few that black people had and when Lennie came into his room he was really defensive over his rights of having his room and that no one else had a right to come in accept him. He also seems proud of himself because the passage mentions that he keeps his room was “swept” and “fairly neat” he has a few shelf and pegs to place his things upon. He the outcast on the ranch because the passage says that he demands that people keep their distance and it says that he’s an “aloof” and this could be due to him being black and mistreated or that his crippled back has made him miserable and he doesn’t want anyone to bother him while he’s disabled. Crooks’ meagre yellow light could suggest that he has no/little hope for things because a light symbolises hope but the light wasn’t bright so that means there was little hope for him and lack in hope could be caused by his sickness of loneliness and emotional and physical pain. Steinbeck
Steinbeck uses their appearances to show how completely different these two men are. George is said to have “sharp features” and Lennie is described to be “shapeless of face” this tells us that George is has a sharp intelligent mind while Lennie is simple and forgetful which helps us to understand why George travels in front and is also the leader. Steinbeck then tells us that George and lennie are dressed in “denim trousers and denim coats” the typical uniform for migrant workers. In the 1930s migrant workers travelled alone as it was easier to find work for one, and were said to be “the loneliest men on earth” the fact that George and Lennie travel together highlights the strangeness and importance of this unlikely friendship. From the start of the dialogue Steinbeck introduces a father and son relationship as George looks after Lennie by carrying his work card and bus ticket.
He is free from the diseases of racism and classism so widespread in those days. Atticus does not judge, that’s the biggest difference between him and the rest of the townspeople. He once said ‘ You never really understand a person until you consider things from their point of view, until you climb into his skin and walk around in it'. Atticus is the most nonjudgmental person in all of Maycomb. • As a father Atticus can be said to be a great father.
“He wore white linen (Hemingway, 167)” This describes Romero as a “pure” human young man. Romero’s Talent and confidence was also described: “Romero was the whole show” “But there was no comparison with Romero” Romero’s Talent in bullfighting made Brett become attracted to him. She noticed how he was quick and stood out from all the other bullfighters: “She saw how Romero avoided every brusque movement and saved his bulls for the last when he wanted them, not winded and discomposed but smoothly worn down”. (171) The Reader is led to view Romero as confident and talented. The Reader is
There are a few moments in the film where we see Red’s emotions, but every time we see them they are sincere and keen. The sound in his voice and the commotion written all over his face is so thorough, that it’s hard to believe. But, every inmate in Shawshank relies on Red, because he’s the rock of their society. Andy Dufresne comes to Shawshank as a honest man. He’s punished for a crime that he didn’t commit and he’s just an all around amicable man.
Also it says that Mr Ghandi is held in estimation by everyone who comes across him. This implies that even Ghandi was seen as a respected man and seen as figure head for the Indian people. This fact makes the task of dealing with him much more difficult than if he were a mere agitating politician. This means that the way Ghandi went about doing his activity’s people could not fault him, so when people try and judge him they could not find any bad things about what he did. He did not get angry with people who insulted him in the street the man was full of inner peace.
Iago, to everyone else, seems like an honest and good man who will do everything in his power to help those around him succeed, but is really just power-hungry, two-faced and manipulative. He is, however, clever, cunning and philosophical, which can be accepted as positive traits. It is these traits that enable him to gain an insight into human nature, and ultimately exploit it, destroying the lives of those around him. Cassio is a character whom the audience don't know much about, but from the story they can understand that he loves his job as a lieutenant, and cares a lot about his reputation. This becomes clear after he is fired from his position, as he says to Iago; "Reputation, reputation, reputation!
