In contemporary societies such as Australia and the United States, do you think the emphasis on gender roles continues to be important?
Batman; one of our all time favourite superheroes, he is tall, strong, fit, and tough; he takes care of everyone in Gotham city and on top of that he is rich and intelligent. He is, the ideal man. Robin on the other hand; Batman’s side kick, is smaller, less intelligent and has at times been represented as weak and vulnerable. And rumours have it, that Robin is ‘gay’. Is this assumption because he does not match the description of the ideal man? She reaches out for help from a well known influential psychologist Doctor Phil, who advices her to suppress her sons feminine behaviour, he suggests that she should discontinue buying her son feminine toys and begin buying him toys that are more masculine.

Eliason examines whether homosexuals and transgender individuals are discriminated against because of their sexual preference or because they are deviating from traditional gender role notions. The study confirms that gender non-conformists are treated as unequal, inferior beings and as a result are subjects of avoidance, isolation, violence, murderous hate crimes and suicidal tendencies (Schope and Eliason, 2004, p. 74).
