The funding trends in the institutions of higher learning in the country, more importantly the universities where closely highlighted. The paper went further to discuss the impact and consequences of poor funding of education in Nigeria. Ways to reversing the negative funding trend and addressing them were also recommended. Consequently, the paper discussed other major factors which if not addressed, would continue to constrain whatever effort made to improve funding in the education sector. The paper concludes by stating that the Nigerian government at all levels (federal, state and local councils) must collaborate with private investors in education to deploy appropriate strategies to enable the nation to reclaim leadership in education provisioning on the continent of Africa.
