Improving Job Performance with Goals, Feedback, Rewards, and Positive Reinforcement
In this chapter I have learned that positive reinforcement is the most effective tool   for encouraging the type of behavior desired primarily because it helps people to   be on their best behavior as they realize that good behavior is rewarded.   Both employees and managers should both be involved when it comes to improving job performance with goals.   When managers involve employees, this helps them understand the goals of the organization, what needs to be done, how it needs to be done, and how well. When it comes to feedback, it needs to be ongoing and both satisfactory and unsatisfactory performance needs to be addressed .   In addition, providing no feedback   at all is one of the worst things a manager can do.   In my opinion, it is a form of ignoring your employees. It also makes employees feel like their manager does not care and that their performance is not important.   This is also bad for the manager because if feedback is not given, then more than likely if there are negative   behaviors that need to be improved, nothing is going to change if as a manager you are not communicating properly with employees. Rewarding involves recognizing employees , both individually and as a group for their performance and the contributions to the agency’s mission. Managers should not only recognize good behavior just for the moment.   Recognition should be a natural part of the day to day experience.   Positive reinforcement is one of the most important employee motivators but unfortunately it is not used as often as it should.   Positive reinforcement should be very specific   because the reality is that people need to know WHY they are being   praised because by doing this, they are more likely to continue this behavior.   A few things that are also very important when using positive reinforcement are doing things like not exaggerating or discounting by saying something like “this...
