How is communication important to the public speaking sphere? By: Curtisha Charles {In Long’s chapter “Communication” in Leadership Tripod: A New Model for Effective Leadership (2004), Long defines communication as “the passing of information between at least two parties” (p. 89). He shares general communication principles, ways to improve communication, and evaluate it. His premise is: “Unless those placing leaders, the leaders themselves, and those under leadership can communicate effectively, leadership will not be as strong as it should be in order for the organization to achieve at its highest level” (p. 87). All involved in communication process from the top down need to understand and implement effective communication despite misconceptions.} Public speaking is one of the most under rated skills learned in school, yet is one of the most valuable. The way you communicate shows a lot about you, and can influence other’s opinions of you. In every profession communication in some way is used and is very important. Good communication skills, no matter what you plan to do in life, will help you out greatly and improve your chances against a harsh job market. One’s whole life may be affected by communication because if you do not know how to communicate possibilities are that you may become shunned. Although public speeches can be of various types, they can generally be grouped into three categories based on their intended purpose: informative, persuasive, and entertaining. The process in which these generalizations occurs is summarized in the communication process which begins with the sender who encodes the message then the message which is sent through a proper channel. The receiver or decoder receives the message and provides feedback. The process in which Communication is done can be verbal or non-verbal, with verbal being oral communication
