1. Describe the importance of note taking, particularly in establishing the integrity of the crime scene. In documenting the scene it is paramount that all information, evidence, first-hand account information, notes etc. be collected thoroughly and properly for a final report, an accurate account of what happened and what was initially seen (first-hand) at the crime scene. This is to establish the integrity of the scene before evidence is collected, and materials or objects are moved. There is no room for mistakes. This information has to be admissible in court. Compare and contrast the advantages of digital versus film photography. Both film and digital photography accurately capture an image of a scene, and both are admissible in court. In contrast, the advantages of digital photographs are that they can be taken immediately, whereas film photography must be developed. They accurately depict the crime scene, and evidence. Photography increases the attention factor, and interest to the persons viewing the images, such as for testimony in a trial. (Hess & Orthmann, 2010) One advantage that Digital photography has over film photography is the amount of time one has to wait in order to see the photo that they have taken. With film photography one has to wait for the film to be developed, when on the other hand using digital photography there is no wait period, the photo can be viewed instantaneously. There is a contrast between the “depth of field” in digital cameras vs. film cameras. A digital camera’s depth of field is dependant on it’s programming, whereas a film camera the depth of field is inherent to the film. The depth of field can distort an object which is out of the focus range of the object being photographed. An example for instance is if one takes a photo body from the direction of the head as the body extends away from the image, the head would in focus, but the rest of the body may be out of focus depending on the quality of the digital camera being used.
