The terms leadership and management are often use interchangeably. While some writers argue that there is a clear distinction between leadership and management, others argue that leadership is simply a function of management. Which view do you feel is the most relevant in the context of your industry and why? How it is possible that some companies are successful, while the other ones, have financial problems? There is a lot of answers and possibilities but everything revolves around about good management. This means being able to establish a positive climate within the organization and getting people together to achieve desired goals (Stevens, 1990). In good management the is played by the leader. A person who can create a relationship with her or his team. So, are management and leadership the same thing? Can we use them interchangeably? In this essay I will try to answer this questions referring to one of the largest industries in the world, Tourism and Hospitality. Who is the leader? This is the person with the largest number of desirable traits like intelligence and motivation. Theirs vision is a part of manifestation of their personality. They have got a close relationship with other people who follow and trust them. Positive attitude and passion to perform the job is characteristic for person with leadership skills (Fincham and Rhodes 2005). Who is than the manager? It could be anyone with appropriate training. They are able to administer and coordinate resources in an effective way. Theirs aim is to achieve the organisation's goals. A manager's characteristic trait is planning, organising and controlling ( Brotherton, 2000). Those two definitions display that the two before mentioned concepts are different things, although they can exist together. It is showed better on examples below.
