Importance of Civic Engagement Civic engagement can be described in many different forms. When I think of civic engagement or civic responsibility, I think of it as an individual’s way of taking responsibility within his or her community. It is when individuals help his or her community by; volunteering, helping others who need it, to be available to others, or to follow through with any obligations the individual may have. Civic engagement can happen anywhere; from work, surroundings in the community, the neighborhood, friends, and at home. How important is civic engagement in people’s lives? Civic engagement is essential for an individual to have in his or her life; it creates a sense of belonging, a sense of community, a sense of well being, it could even improve one’s self. A good example of communities acting together in civic engagement would be a benefit dance for a cause. Another example would be a group of individuals protesting with a group and standing up for what they believe. This shows a grand community coming together and making a difference. They are there for each other and are supporting each other and they all want the same outcome. The whole community is providing each other with civic responsibility. It is essential for an individual to provide civic engagement. Civic engagement provides a sense of community, belonging, and well being. Civic engagement can also improve an individual’s life because it feels rewarding to help others and to make a difference.
