Mitchell Heyne Composition 2 January 7, 2014 Unit 3 Assignment 1 Summary Response Paper “Wow, this isn’t a bad article” I said to myself as I was reading “Is Google Making Us Stupid?” The point of this article is that people are losing the ability to concentrate for long periods of time, especially if they have no interest in the subject. Some people see this as a mental disorder, however, this is due to people trying to look for a quick fix and not doing the thorough research. I will agree that the way people are thinking is indeed changing, some for the good, but most for the bad as well. Search engines are rerouting our memory. According to one article in Science magazine, we're not necessarily losing our ability to remember things.
“Is Google Making Us Stupid?” In “Is Google Making Us Stupid?” by Nicholas Carr (2009) in the article I’m finding myself getting distracted by the music that is playing and the computer screen before me. The thoughts expressed in this article are interesting because I’ve experienced the things Carr has spoken of. In the article Carr explains that over the last decade his internet use has been expansive and has overran his ability to read the way he used to read. “My mind isn’t going…but it’s changing. I’m not thinking the way that I used to think.
Since using the Internet, I have noticed that when I look through magazines, I LOOK through them not read them. I scan the stories I find interesting, I read the captions on the pictures instead of reading the whole story. When reading movie reviews, I look for the synopsis not the full summary, not because I don’t want a spoiler alert but because I don’t wasn’t to read the whole thing. Using the computer, I usually will have multiple tabs open and will go between them and not do one thing at a time. And now I find it hard to focus on one subject at a time.
Today, the internet is one of the most powerful tools throughout the world. In the article, “Is Google Making Us Stupid?” in the magazine The Atlantic, the author, Nicholas Carr, recounts his complications with concentration while reading extended articles and books. He claims these difficulties may be caused by an increased time on the internet. He thinks it changes the way we think and it is affecting our brain. People are losing concentration easier than before internet was created.
His primary arguments seemed to be examples of his own difficulties. He states “Immersing myself in a book or a lengthy article used to be easy…That’s rarely the case anymore.” He continues to write of how his mind starts to wander after a few pages, and he looks for something else to do; reading has become a struggle. Carr says the culprit is the Internet itself, basing his accusation on how in today’s society we can obtain information after just a few minutes on the Net. The media today has started to give us information in as limited amount of words they can allow, so we as users can skim the information we desire then move onto the next sliver of info. He believes our minds have been altered to expect all information the way the Net hands it out: “in a swiftly stream of moving particles,” as he put it.
Amongst all this fast-paced world, people would have rather not considered about the immense amount of books available, opting for more conventional methods of obtaining knowledge. This brings us to the second category of factors that resulting in the burning of books , personal emotion. In our current world, many people feel more important than others due to their excessive readings and the knowledge they have obtained from these readings. This results in both jealousy and envy in the people who may not have time or methods to read’/access these books and obtain the knowledge for themselves. In other words, the internet has affected the way people think, read, and remember. The rapid access to tons of information has also affected people’s behavior making them less patient and less productive. According to Carr, “The Net commands our attention with far greater insistency than our television, or radio or morning newspaper ever did” (117). In today’s world, the internet has become essential to work, school and entertainment.
The Inception of the internet and World Wide Web has changed how we research and gain knowledge. Before its introduction to society, libraries were utilized to reference scholarly works by previous intellectuals, but now they are used for computer access and social media. Google and Wikipedia have leaded the charge of information services and the fingertips of our culture. While a great resource in conjunction with other academic sources, they are not the best example of accurate and reliable material. Google is by far the worst example of an information supplier, in that, a search on Google can inundate the reader with an outlandish list of results.
