Chapter 1 Background to the Problem Leadership is different from education; it involves tasks such as managing others, conducting training, organizing, entertaining, competing and speaking in front of other people. According to Sperandio (2000) the aim of a school is to produce all-rounded educated young people, who are healthy in body, personality and behaviour, and who would be able to survive and live happily and comfortably in our society and the world at large. Sperandio (2000) further stated that young people who have not reached adulthood are still fumbling with the process of developing value system of their own based on the established morals and society codes of our society. For students to grow up and be successful as good members of society strongly depends on the guidelines provided by experienced adults such as classroom teachers and experiences garnered from school clubs. The formality of a school education is highly publicized; however the impact that school clubs play in the leadership qualities of students is not emphasized. School clubs are said to play an integral part in the school community. Clubs have made an enormous contribution to the person who students want to and will become. Clubs have life changing impact on schools as well as the students who participate in them. Many students who are a part of a school club seem to display better leadership qualities as these clubs also seem to boost students’ self-esteem. Cameron’s study (2008) as cited in the Daily Gleaner states that many students are not high achievers in the classroom and, tackling a project that produced good results, boosted their self esteem and gave them a sense of accomplishment.
