Many immigrants moved from foreign lands to the United States. Many of the immigrants faced hardships during their arrive to the United States. A huge nation of immigrants came to the United States. Immigrants came to the United States. There are hardships for many different reasons that immigrants faced after coming into the United States. One reason includes that many people wanted to restrict immigrants from taking jobs. Immigrants came from foreign countries into the United States of America. The Untied Industrial Expansion, rail road building, free western land and economic opportunity led to an increase of immigrants coming into the nation. (Document #1). Twenty five million immigrants came to the United States between 1865-1914. In 1865 immigrants came from the United States because the U.S Civil War ended. In 1914 WW1 (World War One) begins and immigrants coming into the U.S slows down. (O\I) As seen in Document #2 First generation in words of 20th century American immigrants was an interview by June Namias. There are many reasons why Irish citizens immigrated to the United Sates around the 1900 those reasons include; the Irish had to live under awful stress, if they were not able to pay rent they would be kicked out, they had no place for a bed or anything and they could be killed by trespassing on their own property. Reasons living in a tenement were often difficult for immigrants for two reasons; one was that living in a tenement was often difficult for immigrants because it was a small room with lots to do in it. Second reason is the small room was a crowded room served with many purposes used for work and living, cluttered laundry inside and used to cook in the same room. A tenement was buildings with small apartments usually ten people were in the one room. The one room was made for many purpose but their was no restroom, or fire escape. In the picture it shows that there are more girls then their were boys, the people were working (knitting), half were children, their were only two windows, herbs were in the window, the room was run down, their was one picture on the wall, mirror and one small bed. (Document #5) Things that I found out about this picture that you can not tell just by looking at this photo are; tenements are a small apartment with usually 10 people in it working, tenements are located in city slums, a city slum is a run down area, immigrants who lived in a tenement believed that they would have the American Dream, and building codes witch is a set of standards established and enforced by local government for the structural safety of buildings.
