Clear Lake is located halfway between downtown Houston and Galveston Island. The Johnson Space Center is in Clear Lake and most of the economy here is dependent on the success of NASA. Even though my street address is Houston, the demographics of Clear Lake could not be more different. According to figures from the Clear Creek School District, sixty-three percent of the students in my old district are white, nine percent are African-American, seventeen percent Hispanic, and nine percent Asian. Over the past few years, White Americans have become the minority in Houston. We have seen a major increase in Hispanic immigration to our community. I do not think that this is a bad thing, but many people are questioning our border security. The reason for this is many of the Hispanic Americans are living here illegally. Following the shooting, a video showed Houston police officers pulling open the back doors of Johnson’s patrol car and yanking the suspect out of the back seat….The suspect should not have been in the United States. Quintero was deported in 2004 after a conviction for indecency with a child. “The subject was deported, and yet he came back, so if the government fulfilled their responsibility of protecting the border we would probably not be standing here today,” Hurt said. The Houston Police Department has been struggling this year to deal with …an immigration problem that is only getting worse. Border Patrol said thousands of illegal immigrants cross into the United States each month. Officer Johnson received a commendation for valor for pulling several children out of a burning building. He leaves behind a wife who is also a police officer and their five children” (Cop Killing Sparks Immigration Debate, 2006, p.1). As if the crime itself wasn’t bad
