The book is made up of three parts; the first part starts around 1989 (and ends in 1972), when the Garcia girls had lived in the United States for many years and were then fully Americanized. Once around all her family and the beautiful island, she starts to remember how good and simple her life used to be before divorces and nervous breakdowns. Sandra, too, had suffered with nervous breakdowns and ends up in a mental facility. Sofia, also known as Fifi and the youngest Garcia, upsets her father, Carlos, by falling in love with a German and running away with him.

The essay “Se Habla Espanol” by writer Tanya Barrientos is a first person narrative describing her life experiences starting from her childhood up through her adult years. Tanya Barrientos is a first generation immigrant, coming from Guatemala at the age of three. In her memoir, Barrientos explains how Americans at that time were not culturally tolerant, and foreigners were expected to “leave their cultural baggage at the border.” As a result, her parents immerse her into the American culture by speaking only English, to ensure her success. However, in doing so she became ashamed of her ethnicity, and failed to identify with her native culture (Roen, Glau, & Maid 2011). .

Being an immigrant who has lived here for 11 years in the US, I am finally in the process of obtaining my citizenship, and it’s a great feeling. Bharati, the speaker in the story has her citizenship and her sister Mira, only has her green card.
-Firoozeh Dumas, born in Abadan, Iran, came to the United States with her family in 1972 when she was seven years old. It was to be a temporary move. They settled in Whittier, California. The father had spoken about America "with the eloquence and wonder normally reserved for a first love." Thus, the family had high expectations of this country full of "clean bathrooms and very, very kind people.

The United States is one of the most diverse countries in the world. The Bay Area is filled with millions of different races.
