Statement of Explanation The imaginative Landscape is where I define myself. Our lives and what makes us individual is heavily influenced by our experiences through our lives. It is these characteristics from the imaginative landscape that moulds our personalities and makes us who we are. MacLeod’s short story The Boat demonstrated how a landscape can either complement or conflict with a person’s sense of identity. Personally I related to all the characters in the various responses to the coastal landscapes of Cape Breton. I found that I reflected on my relationship to surfing, and In particular how the sea continues to inform me about who I am, emotionally and psychologically. The father in The Boat lives within an internal landscape of song, poem, and knowledge. While the mother lives comfortably within the physical landscape which is governed by traditional routine. For me, I live within an internal and external world when I go surfing. I have utilised the characteristics from The Boat to structure my story. The Boat appealed to me due to the connection that the characters have to the sea especially the mother “who looks upon the sea”. My story is a personal reflective piece which uses first person narrative in order to describe the moments in the past which have connected in a poignant way to me. I have attempted to describe the physical landscape of the coast using metaphor and personification similar to the descriptive techniques used by Macleod. I also intend to use flashback in order to contrast the different feelings experienced in different places that have ultimately provided pieces of my own psychological and emotional landscape. My story is set in Samoa in the south pacific and describes the experiences surfing waves I was not used to and linking them to other surfing experiences at home.
