Characterization: The Iliad The Iliad features characters that battle for their honor and for the mistake made at the hands of the manipulating gods and goddesses. The personalities of these characters are also brought into focus throughout the epic in the way they act. The two main characters of Achilles and Agamemnon are the characters that have the most developed story lines throughout. Achilles is the mighty warrior who came upon great fame and honor through his amazing battle skills and his protection from the River Styx. Achilles is the greatest warrior that the Achaians have but his pride is hurt deeply when Agamemnon take away his war prize. This is the first instance in which a reader may feel bad for Achilles because of his King’s action. In the epic, it states how Achilles refused to enter battle with Agamemnon because of how upset and angry he was over this stab at his pride. This removal from battle is a crucial element in the plot. Achilles also doesn’t quite understand the normal behavior of his society. That fact may also have led to Achilles decision to refuse the peace offer from Agamemnon, leading to the turning point in the story line. Before this point it was possible to feel sorry for Achilles’s loss but from here onward it is harder to do so because his excessive pride proceeds all else. Agamemnon’s character takes a different approach on life in comparison to Achilles. His power was inherited from his father so his glory does not come from battle like Achilles. He is expected to stabilize power and keep the balance in check. As shown in the beginning of the epic, he was not carrying the responsibilities out correctly which lead to his fight against Achilles. He uses his power to his advantage which is why Agamemnon believes that all will be right if he takes Briseis after giving up Chrysies. Agamemnon’s character does not take as
