For this essay team D chose to write about illegal immigration. Illegal immigration is a pressing issue which affects many people within the United States. There are over 4 million people waiting to get into the United States using the legal means (Heritage foundation, 2013), while there are already over 11 million in the United States illegally (Illegal Immigration, 2013). Many people say that this benefits the United States, while other argues that illegal immigration is just a burden that causes unneeded expenses to the United States and those legal citizens. There has been approximately 2 billion a year being paid for emergency treatment for groups that are mostly made up of illegal immigrants. The biggest share of this would be women who show up in emergency rooms to deliver their babies. Emergency rooms are required to screen and stabilize patients no matter of citizen or insurance status. There are some that believe these services encourage the women to cross the border for care. Advocates for immigrants feel that the funding is not enough. They feel this because it does not pay for prenatal care or other vital services (Galewitz 2013). Advocates for immigrants feel that it is foolish that Medicaid only pays for the births. If prenatal care is provided it can possible prevent long term and costly complications for American children later on. The hospitals are not allowed to ask whether the individual is an illegal immigrant. The hospital determines this as they collect information from the patient. According to the Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR) states that the funding led more women to give birth in the United States. FAIR refers to these babies as “anchor babies”. It is believed that there are tens of thousands anchor babies born to immigrants every year (Galewitz, 2013). FAIR feel that these women giving birth in the United States may think that it will help them gain legal status due to the infant being a citizen. The director for FAIR feels that the focus in saving this money is to prevent illegal immigration from happening in the first place. Information collected from seven states believed to have the highest illegal immigrants show that emergency services are delivered to more than 100,000 people a year (Galewitz 2013).
