The company, which pioneered flat-pack design furniture at affordable prices, is now the world’s largest furniture retailer. IKEA was founded in 1943 by 17-year-old Ingvar Kamprad in Sweden. The company that was originated in Smaland, Sweden, distributes its products through its retail outlets. As of 2008, the chain has 285 stores in 36 countries, most of them in Europe, North America, and Asia. Ingvar Kamprad, an entrepreneur from the Smaland providence in southern Sweden, had an innovative idea to offer home furnishing products of good function, quality and design at prices much lower than competitors us using simple cost-cutting solutions that did not affect the quality of its products. Ingvar used every opportunity to reduce cost, and he scraped and saved in every way possible except on ideas and quality. The name IKEA is an acronym, the I and K being his initials, while E stood for Elmtaryd, the name of the family farm, and A stood for Agunnaryd, the name of the village in Southern Sweden where the farm was located. The company is primarily concerned with providing a broad range of well-designed, functional home furnishing goods at an affordable cost to attract more customers. This concept of the IKEA is the foundation of their business operations, which includes product designing, manufacturing, transportation, retailing, and assembling.
