Poems can make you laugh, cry, think or be silent as we ponder the words that are written. What Makes poetry works better than a short story is the repetitive or the shortened way word are written or placed together to form a rhythm or a song. When a poet uses a rhyme as his theme is can be catchy or funny and makes us enjoy reading it. When it is worded as a song we can easily remember it since everyone loves to sing even when most of us cannot hold a tune but we can hold a rhythm. A poet relies on his feeling to convey the current situations that they are in.
The reader also gets an auditory image when Solway says, “and settle in a rush of silence” (43), giving the reader that image of peacefulness and quietness. Lastly, in the last stanza Solway describes the board one last time, “the man guides/ his brash, obedient legend/ into shore” (48-50). The word “brash” (49) means energetic or highly spirited. The reader gets the image of an energetic, yet obedient board that the windsurfer controls. It is a legend because it is what helps the windsurfer do the activity.
Compare the way the poets use structure and language to convey meaning in ‘What were they like?’ and one other poem. (27 marks) I am going to compare the way in which poets use structure and language to convey meaning in ‘What were they like?’ and ‘Island Man’. I have chosen Island Man as my second poem because I believe that like ‘What were they like’, it has an interesting structure that leaves a lot of room for comparison. Levertov using quite a unique way of structuring her poem by setting it out in a “question answer” structure – each question is paired with a like numbered answer. By using this technique the poet is conveying a childlike innocence within the poem that contrasts with the horrific language used in the ‘answers’.
As well, the gloominess of his poetry could also be due to his longing effect of sadness that he attempts to express. These three poems have a distinct connection to each other. All of which share a resemblance, because all of them express love to the other in one way or another; as it is seemingly that these poems in their entirety have been commemorated to someone Poe himself once felt these feelings for. For example in the poem “To Helen”, the narrator portrays of Helen’s beauty. A simple poem, and seemingly short compared to the other two, it simply tells of the narrator’s views of the young lady he is admiring.
People thought that Brown’s irony was sharp, his ideas were exciting, and he was not only and protestor of his time but one of the first times. Brown’s Work protested the classical folklore in the way it was written. “He infused his poetry with genuine characteristic flavor by adopting his medium geniality and optimism” was James Johnson reaction to his
He wept.” This shows how Leeza made Reef open up his emotions during the scene at the rehabilitation center. Another example of Leeza having influencing Reef is when on page two-hundred thirteen “And Carly had come to collect him [Reef] they’d still be been talking.” This shows that Reef and Leeza are getting along quite well witch suggests that Leeza has an impact on how he feels and that he can talk top her about almost anything as he opens up to her more. Secondly Frank Colville has a great impact of influence on Reef as well because Frank being Reef’s group home leader or mentor is trying to lead Reef on the righteous path of love compassion and respect towards other people. We see this throughout the novel often, an example is on page one-hundred six “All it says is you understand and agree to abide by the North
Form and structure are used effectively in both poems to show feelings and emotions to their lovers. For example, both poems use rhyme effectively. In “Hour”, there is what seems like a regular ABAB rhyme scheme, with words such as “rich” and “ditch” rhyming, but in the second and third stanzas the “A” rhymes don’t tend to be half-rhyme “hair” with “here” and “hour” with “ear”. This could show the reader that their love carries on through hard times. Alternatively, it could mean that their love is so strong that it causes a change to the rhythm of the poem, as it conquers time.

The free-verse style of narration also leaves some room for an interesting arrangement of the words. The last line of each stanza should go with the ideas of the next stanza. This enjambment strings the reader along the poem, until the main idea in the last two lines. The poem has a very smooth flow and is easy to read, which instills an interest into the reader. The mood of this poem shows a paradox between life and death.
They also would know what to expect from the way he describes this thrill ride if someone who read it has never windsurfed before. His tone is more of passionate, and as if he were explaining a favorite hobby that he enjoys doing. He even uses a technique Carmen figura to give the poem a sense of surfing out and into the shore. From the first line he can have you visualize a first person view as to what it looks like while riding. “It rides upon the wrinkled hide of water, like an upturned hull of a small canoe or kayak.” (1-3) He even throws in some images referring to how it moves “Then a puffed up right angle of wind pushes it forward, out into the bay, where suddenly it glitters into speed,” (9-11) “Glitters” is a good choice word for speed!
