Heinlein wrote If This Goes On- in 1940, published as a short story in “Astounding Science-Fiction.” It was later revised and expanded so that it may be included in the collection “Revolt in 2100” in 1953. The novel is part of Heinlein's “Future History series.” The “Future History” describes a projected future of the human race from the middle of the 20th century through the early 23rd century. The novel “If This Goes On-” shows what might happen to Christianity in the United States given mass assertions, and a hysterical masses (society) in a theocratic future. The Plot Theocracy is a form of government where a divine being or the almighty is officially recognized as the civil Ruler, an official policy is administered by officials observed as divinely guided, or is harmonious to the doctrine of a particular religion or religious group. The story is set in a future theocratic American society, capital of the former United States ruled by the latest in a array of fundamentalist Christian “Prophets.” The first prophet was Nehemiah Scudder, a backwoods (a person from the middle of nowhere) preacher turned president, then later became a dictator,a person with total power. John Lyle, Legate an Angel of the Lord, and member of the elite corps that guards the holy person of the Prophet Incarnate, a junior army officer under the Prophet Nehemiah Scudder. John becomes disillusioned with life in the Palace and begins to questions his faith. John, while standing guard one night, meets and falls in love with one of the prophet’s Virgins, Sister Judith. Judith, is freshly caught Virgin, she is nervous and faints when she is called upon to render sexual service to the Prophet and is confined to her quarters until she accepts her role as a Virgin.
