Essential foods for our health Our health depends on the types of food we are eating daily. They are various kinds of food but all are composed of six main essential nutrient groups, which are carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, vitamins, minerals, and water. Therefore, our daily diet should contain every essential nutrient. First, carbohydrate is the main fuel used by our body especially the brain and nervous system and by red blood cells. Although there are great variations in the quantity and type of carbohydrates eaten throughout the world, most diets contain more than enough. The carbohydrate rich foods are rice, wheat, sweet potato, sugar, etc. Second, lipids are mostly fats and oils. Lipids in the diet transport the four fat-soluble vitamins (vitamins A, D, E, and K) from intestine to body. Lipids in the diet are a more concentrated form of energy than carbohydrates. After utilization of lipids, the surplus fat are store in our body as fatty tissue which can serves as an energy reserve as well as helping to insulate the body and cushion the internal organs. Too much fat is not good for health. We can get protein form every kind of meat, fish and beans. It is essential for muscle building and our immunity. The World Health Organization recommends a daily intake of 0.75 gram of good quality protein per kilogram of body weight for adults of both sexes. Vitamins and minerals are the anti-oxidants found in very small amounts in fruits, vegetables and meats and required for normal functioning of our body—indeed, for survival. They play the essential role in the metabolic process of carbohydrate, lipid and protein. With vitamins and minerals, our body’s functions will not carry out properly.
