Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's Quintet for Clarinet and Strings was written in 1789 for the clarinet player Anton Stadler. That is why this quintet is sometimes referred to Stadler’s Quintet. The instruments it was written for were one clarinet and a string quartet which consists of two violins, a viola and a cello. The piece includes 4 movements and movement 4 consists of 5 variations and the allegretto con variationi. In each of these variations Mozart had used themes, compositional devices and classical features to unite the piece. These classical features fit into three concepts of music. These are duration, texture and structure. It also affects the atmosphere. The finale consists of 5 variations and the allegretto con variationi. The theme in the allegretto con variationi are 2 four bar phrases. The first phrase ends on an imperfect cadence, from I to V. The second phrase ends on a perfect cadence, from V to I. In both phrases the first two bars interact with the other 2 bars using the feature call and response. This motif was regularly recurring within the piece. The chord structure for the first 8 bars is I I V V I V I V I I V V vi ii V I. There is not much variety within the chord structure as it was common to use a simple and organised theme in the classical period. However, the variety in the chord structure, in bar 7, and the use of call and response creates interest. The texture is homophonic which is predominant in the classical period. The texture begins thin and then gradually gets thicker. In variation 1, the instruments especially the clarinet make wide leaps between one to another. In bars 9 to 11 violin 1 plays the quavers similar to an alberti bass. Also in bars 12 and 15 of variation 1 the quavers ascend chromatically. In the first two bars the fragmented motif is played by the violins and then in bar 4 the same fragmented motif is played
