1. Introduction Reducing poor performance and improving organisational performance, are main priorities for any P&D functions (Taylor, 2007). They are complex processes and some of them have no easy solution (Taylor, 2007). This paper identifies different approaches to Performance Management and demonstrates the level to which human resource management has developed existing issues that may occur in management of labour in modern organisation. The aim is to critically evaluate different approaches to performance management and how they meet organisation requirements. This paper will introduce concept of reward, motivation and appraisal as a core functions in performance management as a strategic role for HR functionaries. Finally a discussion on how management have attempt to resolve their problems of converting labour potential in performance they desire by highlighting importance of motivation and reward in performance management, then attention turns into performance appraisal. 2. Performance management External forces such as competition, regulation and legislation have impact on organisational performance. However, the behaviour and quality of employees within organisation has most important effect of performance. It has been proven that most of organisation goals can be achieved through the effort of employees, therefore if employee performance is improved, the organisation will be more successful. (Leopold, 2002). Thus performance management is a process bringing together many elements that make up the successful practice of HRM including, reward and recognition. Performance management is about creating a culture that encourages the continuous improvement of business processes and of individuals’ skills, behaviour and contributions.
