Theory Critique - Crabb and Hawkins Rose Monk COUN 507 Liberty University Dr. Hunter November 3, 2013 Concise Summary of Theories Larry Crabb’s model for Christian counselors is based on Christian values and includes secular principles that are consistent with Scripture. Plain and simple this theory works to create a receptive mind for the truth. Ultimately, the idea behind this model is to work on the thought process, and in altering the way the mind thinks, this will motivate correct actions to reach the client goal. By identifying the problems in feelings, behaviors and thinking, this model not only works to change the way clients think, yet their belief of needing anything other than God. Understanding the basics of
However, it appears that the shift in focus can drastically change the interpretations in the Bible. Ultimately, fundamentalists accept as true the inerrancy of the Bible as rationale. However, Wesleyans tend to take away that “the proof of the gospel resides primarily in its being lived, in transformed life, not in logic and argumentation.” Two entirely different understandings of the same Bible, exemplifies another key contrast among fundamentalists and
Many examples in the book made me consider perspectives that I had never thought of before. In my opinion, this book definitely stirred up a reassurance of my place in society and what can be done to liberate the oppressed. I believe the voices represented in this book can cause negative reactions from some churches because it goes against what is and has been normal. Churches would not really like to change the view of “white” Christ to be a diverse Christ of another race because it would change certain aspects and power. The church is called to be one diverse body of God, but as churches can remain dominant to one race, it becomes difficult to incorporate diversity into what already is established.
It guides them to make the correct ethical decisions in life fulfilling their role as Christians. Ethics is the decision between right and wrong influenced heavily by beliefs and responsibilities of an adherent. Through the Bible, teachings by Jesus through parables such as the ‘Good Samaritan’ educate them on the way they should behave in everyday situations. In this parable, a man is neglected by a priest and a Levite but is helped by a Samaritan, a person who was disliked in that time. It shows Christians that they should help everyone who is in need, leaving no one behind.
Name: Ana Garconvil Class: Bibl 350 Chapter assignment 3 Chapter Assignment 3: 10-1, 10-2, 12-1, 12-2 Assignment 10-1 Reader response is when the reader interpretion is defined by his or her own understanding. This also means that it is the reader who defines any meaning, and because of that each reader will get something different from the text. The reader’s response may result in a negative effect in that the author’s original meaning may be lost to the reader by taking such a liberty. This lies at the very heart of what the meaning of Scripture is to the reader. Contrary to the reader response is the author’s intent. Authorial intent is when the author control the meaning of the text and the meaning, author intent according to textbook is defined as that which the author wishes to convey with his signs.
When Biblical scholars debate this they lose the true meaning of the text. They become more focused on proving it to be factual rather than looking at the scripture for what it is. The scientific theory is backed by better evidence and is more likely to be true, there is too much evidence to ignore it, and therefore it should be accepted for the most part. Then Genesis can be used as a metaphorical story that allows us to understand more fully who God really is. Genesis 1-2 can show us that God is all-powerful and all-loving.
In many different ways, however, one way stands out the most and that is his ability to organize the information and make easy for the reader to understand the material. This information can be acknowledged by the way he prepared the information in a structured manner to assist the counselor. Another thing that is to be commended is the author’s ability to implement scriptures as a reference point to draw strength from God’s Word to support with life difficulties. One negative that has been determined in the text is the data regarding confrontation Wright emphases the counseling abilities such as empathy and he narrates these skills to actions Jesus put on a display. Wright also, narrates confrontation to articulating empathy for an individual in assisting them to make healthier choices.
The bible is a sacred text that can and has been utilized for the justification of so many different viewpoints within society. The reason that the bible can be used to offer validation for numerous issues is that the scriptures are ambiguous and vague. Passages in the bible do not provide a distinct way for how they should be interpreted and deciphered. Commonly, this ambiguity and indistinctness serves and leaves room for multiple interpretations of the same passages of scriptures. Some people place debate upon the fact that the bible should not be interpreted literally and that it should be looked at and analyzed as it is a form of literature.
And just what is missiology? It’s what effective Christian missionaries study and practice. They make it their business not only to understand the timeless gospel message, but also the culture in which they are ministering. They understand that communicating effectively means much more than learning the language. Effective missionaries are lifelong learners of culture, working to understand where their people currently are so they can lead them to a true, yet truly enculturated, understanding of the grace and truth of Jesus Christ.
However, per Webb, if we are, then it is a very ultra-soft patriarchy. Except for some light disagreements with some of his criteria selections, I agree overall with Webb that the spirit of the Scripture should definitely play a part in how we stand on certain issues in today’s culture. It’s imperative that we look behind the static words on the page, so to speak, and look at the context of the situation to determine what God is trying to tell us. Webb does a fairly good job of making us understand this. One may not agree with his methods of choosing the criteria, but you can’t disagree with his assessment that the spirit of what is trying to be said in Scripture should rule the
