11 December 2014 Drowning in the Discourse Julie Wildhaber says that “A strong, well-defined voice is the bridge between you and your audience: It helps your readers understand who you are, and it helps you engage them” (Wildhaber). For students in college, their audience will always be their professor. Along with expecting a strong voice, professors expect students, even first year students, to master and employ the many other writing skills that make up academic discourse. Most students tend to prioritize the more technical conventions of writing over the development of a distinguished and personalized voice. The conventions of college writing are very complex and if professors are more helpful and patient with first year students as they learn academic discourse, students will be better prepared for all future academic endeavors and they will have a better opportunity to strengthen and develop their voice.
This method usually involves professors delivering lectures to students with little to no opportunity for student input through “discussion or experiential exercises” (Michel, Cater, & Varela, 2009, p. 400). It is more commonly used in higher education because it requires “less student activity and engagement” (Guest, 2001, p. 315), allowing professors to “import” large amounts of knowledge and material to huge classes in a brief amount of time (Michel et al., 2009, p.
Voting for me would allow them to have a better secretary for the rest of the year and possibly a better representative next year. By voting for me to go to CASL, my classmates would benefit because we would have a better & experienced leader in their class. I have shown major commitment and dedication to both leadership and my class. Every single day (even Mondays), I am early and ready to learn how to become a better leader. I have also been at almost every single workday the freshman class has had for all required events.
Since students attend colleges to learn and to educate, colleges should guarantee a safety environment, especially their labs. Instructors and professors should understand that classes size have a significant role for a safety work. If the number of student increases in such places, the number of accidents increases too. Colleges should limit the number of students in classrooms and laboratories on average about 23 students. Unless classrooms are larger than the average, it becomes difficult for science instructor to handle, to transport equipments and to make secure experiments with
In the article Stop the Madness, written by Diane Ravitch, she elaborates on the issue of exceptionally high test taking. Teachers teach towards their test and as a result, are lazy. These faculty members, especially the teachers, worry more about the final test scores their students receive than if their students are grasping and fully understanding the educational topics. This is because the test grades that the students earn is how teachers are judged and ranked in the system. Therefore, in order to achieve these ideal scores, they are using the same tests and classwork every year.
JROTC LET3 JROTC Final Exam What is your assigned duty position? Platoon Leader (Cadet 2nd Lieutenant) Part A Your Staff Responsibilities My duty for the Semiannual Awards Ceremony was to have the parents of the cadets’ sign in. I helped out cadets on correcting their gigs, making sure they looked sharp. Another thing I did was help out to make sure everything was in order and after the ceremony I helped clean and pick up stuff in the kitchen. I wish I could have had more time to help out by setting up the equipment, cleaning, and organizing.
However many students want to be given the freedom to decide which classes to attend. Most colleges and universities give professors the authority to set their own attendance rules. On other hand some argue that mandatory composition should not be required, as text books are enough of knowledge and information can prepare them salves without any help from professors. Writing is not just for English major. Taking English course can prepare the students to write successful papers throughout student’s university career.
Having a friend for Malcolm X to emulate was probably the turning point and the motivation for him. I agree with Malcolm X’s statement that most colleges have too many distractions. I think he was referring to four year universities, because I do not believe community college were around then. Reading is really the only way to educate yourself about
Final exams are a time of stress for students to worry about if they can recall all the lessons that their professors have went over within that semester. Students who are scarcely passing any of their classes need their final exams to be passing grades, so they tend to study a little harder. Finals also allow students to see how all the lessons they have learned connect through small facts. Identifying and understanding thoroughly everything the professor particularly emphasizes in class can be a hard and tough experience when preparing to study for finals. In Joy Alonso’s “Two Cheers for Examination “she uses examinations to examine the purposes and useless of exams in two and four year colleges to appear to students and teachers.
In the article “Fear of Heights: Teachers, Parents, and Students are Wary of Achievement.” Author Bob Chase, who is president of the National Education Association pointed that teachers and parents should more worried about the students who involved in many extracurricular activities after school. He called these students are the “C” students. We know in all of the school teachers like the “A” students because they concentrate in class, serious write notes and review, all of the test result are also very good. Instead, the “C” students very busy every day. Since they into the class, they don't stop talking, send messages and also have a lot of function in school clubs.
