An Icy Transition I drank the last sip of the Icelandic hot chocolate and tried to finish all the crumbs from my chocolate chip muffin, wishing I could make this moment with my three favorite people in the world, my parents and my younger sister, last a little bit longer. That was the moment I had been dreading- the moment I had to say goodbye to them. I had expected to produce a waterfall of tears at my departure but not a single drop left my eyes as I hugged them and walked away. I guess I was more excited than nervous about the new adventure I was about to embark on. As I rode up the escalator, I watched my family recede into the distance. My dream was turning into a reality. I was about to become a student athlete on a full scholarship at one of the most prestigious universities in the world- The University of California, Berkeley. I played soccer with a club team back in Iceland called Valur and a few of the older players on my team had gone to the States to study and play soccer. These girls were my role models at that time; I thought it was such a good idea to combine prestigous academics with elite level soccer. In Iceland there are no college sport teams so being a student as well as an athlete is very difficult, especially when school and sport take place at opposite ends of the city during the same time frame. Hearing stories from these girls about their experience in the States made me certain that studying abroad would help me achieve my goals in life. The girls spoke as if their four years in the States were the most memorable and academically rewarding years of their life.
