IBM Strengths and Weaknesses IBM is currently the market leader because of its competitive advantages that its competitors do not share. One of the main strengths that IBM possesses is the world’s most advanced manufacturing plant in the world. The ISTP houses new innovations such as a closed loop circuit that circulates chilled water, a data flow with thermal flow dynamics, and an ergonomic design that reduces noise and improves the cleanliness of the system. All of these advantages improve manufacturing processes that result in better performance than its competitors. Some other strengths of IBM are that it boasts the most secure encryption coding system, which unlike the competition, is embedded in the hardware, middleware, and operating system. IBM also has the luxury of tapping into the resources and capital of a company of its size. Leaders at IBM invest in the infrastructure needed all over the globe to stay ahead of its competition. IBM’s size is both a strength and a weakness. With thousands of employees across the globe and a vast network, IBM can be slow to react to industry fluctuations as well as customer needs. Another weakness is that IBM has a very diversified business operation. While this is good for the overall portfolio of IBM, this may hurt the amount of resources it dedicates to its mainframe computer manufacturing. Since competitors like Oracle and HP are spending more resources on manufacturing, there is a possibility of them taking over more market share in the future. IBM may also face future monopoly charges by the U.S. Department of Justice because they have been accused of blocking competitors from licensing its mainframe software.
