His sadistic nature is shown early in the novel as he picks on the weakest link of the group Barbara. He makes Barbara show her breasts and nearly makes her show her ‘slit’. This shows that he has loss his childlike purity and good will. However, the more significant loss of innocence is in the main character Michele. He has his innocence shattered by the knowledge of his father’s involvement in the kidnapping of Filippo.
Pearl is also described to one day be a "blessed soul in Heaven" which reinforces Puritan religious values. Although Hester has sinned, her child can still be pure and go to Heaven. This shows that Puritans have some mercy, even though Pearl was a product of sin. Hester was still held with "apprehension" about all of these thoughts and ideas jumbling in her head. She was surprised Pearl "would be for good," since her sin "had been evil."
Confirmation to support this is when David reveals "did I wonder what might happen if I killed my uncle". David managed to see some good in people including his father. Watson demonstrates the life of David Hayden growing up, and realizing later what a great role model he had in his father. David saw his father as a weak man and he thought his perfect role model was Frank, which is seen as he said "not manly figure like uncle Frank". He felt let down in his father, as he didn't arrest anyone or carry a gun, "And that disappointed me at times".
And so Okonkwo was ruled by one passion – to hate everything that his father Unoka had loved. One of those things was gentleness and another was idleness (Chapter 2 Pg 3).” This quote shows the truth of how Oknonkwo was not really this cruel, tyrannical man. He lives his life in constant fear of being a failure the same as his dad. Who was very weak and considered lazy by his tribe. Even his father’s death has brought shame to Okonkwo.
Also, John Proctor is surprisingly sensitive and thoughtful. When he asks his wife if she is saddened he displays concern for her well-being. He wants nothing more than for his dear wife to feel loved and he is willing to do whatever it takes to make her feel that way. He always spoke good about his wife. For example, when Elizabeth was accused of witchcraft, John said, “My wife cannot lie, I have paid much to learn it sir.” (p.111) John Proctor's major flaw was his great pride in his name.
Therefore it is clear that abuse of power causes the destruction of spirituality. Next, symbolism is used in the novel to represent destruction of spirituality due to corruption. Here Roger kills the sow which they hunted in a very unusual/unpleasant way, that it clearly represents fallen spirituality. “Roger found a lodgment for his points and began to push till he was leaning with his whole weight. […] ‘Right up her ass!’ ‘Did you hear?’ ‘Did you hear what he said?’ ‘Right up her ass!’” (Golding 149).
The narrator’s delivery from start to finish keeps the reader off balance, thus adding to the frightening style and evolution of the story. By using numerous exclamation punctuation and Gilman gives the narrator an optimistic tone. To compliment this, the narrator also comments on her husband’s love for her and how smart he is. This all conflicts with the reality of which she is describing, where she has severe depression and disagrees with her husbands method of treatment. The upbeat narration gives the reader an initial sense of optimism yet as the story progresses and
This specific passage is a turning point in the speaker’s life, as he encounters the cruel reality of a world he’ll be forced to live in and so leaves in him a terrible memory which he will never be able to forget. The author’s use of despairing diction represents the despair which the speaker so much feels within himself, being that the two are in essence a single entity. The “murdered” faith which turned dreams to “dust” and will “never” be forgotten displays the profoundly negative effect it had on him as it. It set the trail for the inner turmoil he would still have to face and stirred newfound emotions to deal with. The shock of the experience was so intense that it set his previous deep devotion and absolution faith of the religious teachings he followed into conflict.
Of Mice and Men In Of Mice and Men lots of the characters have many troubles and problems: primarily with loneliness and segregation for being different which make you sympathize the characters. Lennie is the most obvious character to sympathize as he gets killed at the end of the novella and seems to have a child like mind as shown by how Slim notices this by saying “He jes like a kid” Steinbeck shows Lennie as childlike to show that Lennie is innocent, this is used to show that when Lennie does something wrong he does not do this to be cruel but he is just oblivious to what he is doing. Secondly, Steinbeck likens Lennie to an animal through the way Lennie moves; “dragging his feet a little, the way a bear drags his paws” which shows Lennies vulnerability as when he is killed he is not aware of what is going to happen which is similar to how the way Old Candy’s dog was killed as the dog did not know what was going to happen to it and just followed Carlson unaware of Carlson’s intentions; this trusting nature of Lennie makes the reader sympathize him.
It’s only when we come to accept our differences that we truly belong People are threatened by what is different – the unknown, the other. It is only when an individual recognizes and accepts their differences do they truly belong. The Simple Gift by Steven Herrick, 10 Things I Hate About You directed by Gil Junger and Numb by Linkin Park all show the impact of this decision on an individual. A poor or negative relationship can often influence an individual’s sense of belonging. In Steven Herrick’s verse novel The Simple Gift; the protagonist Billy experiences feelings of alienation because of his abusive father.
