Dental Hygienist By: Tylyn Triplett Ever since I was little I wanted to be in the dental field. My mother inspired me at a young age to be a dental hygienist. My mom is a Dental Assistant and she absolutely loves her job. When I was eight years old I fell off the kitchen counter and knocked out my front teeth. My mom knew what to do immanently. Unfortunately they were my front teeth so I had to have surgery to put them back in. Then, a few years later I got braces to straighten my teeth and correct my over bite. Ever since then I just love my smile. Last summer I got a job in the lab at my mom’s dental office. While I was working I sometimes would get to shadow surgeries and help out. You must be licensed by the state in which they practice. You can get this at your local community college for example western piedmont community college. If you would like to go to school for four years like me, then you would be getting you bachelor’s degree which in the long run comes to your advantage. When you go to turn in your resume when you apply for a job the more educated in that profession you are the more chance you will have in getting that job. Also, the higher your pay will be which the part I is like, the higher the pay. Some of the more major colleges are University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, University of North Carolina at Greensboro, and Western Carolina University. You set your on appointments and only have to work three to four days a week. Your starting pay is approximately $32.81 per an hour. That’s about 68,250 per a year. Your work setting will be indoors. You will be in a very clean and sterol work area. You will be dressed in scrubs or your uniform, safety glasses/goggles surgical mask, and gloves to protect from diseases. You work closely with dental assistants and the dentist. Work in this occupation involves sitting more than one-third of the time. You also have to make a lot of repetitive motions which may cause your arms or hands to get tired easy. You may have exposure to radiation more than once a month and have exposure to dust, gas, fumes, with poor ventilation. Some of the more physical activities of this job are bending, stretching, twisting, or reaching while cleaning teeth. You may have to carry heavy equipment or work with very sharp objects. Not only do you have to prepare the room for the appointment but after the appointment is over, you have to completely clean and sterilize the room. There is many steps to cleaning the room. You can only touch “dirty” materials when you have on “dirty” gloves. For example if you picked up a needle, your gloves just became dirty. You are not allowed to touch anything clean. You have to change gloves every single time so as you can image they go through many boxes of gloves in an office. The
