My teenagers say yes. Difficult communication with teens is made more difficult by sleep deprivation due to late nights on their phones. Adults are also guilty of mindlessly plugging in to their phones and losing hours at a time. Smartphones are a distraction that some people are unable to resist, even when driving a car. Texting and cell phone usage have been linked to motor vehicle accidents that often end in death.
February 22, 2014 Dear Board of Education, Teenagers tend to obtain inadequate amounts of sleep on school nights. As a result, these students have problems with fatigue, alertness, grades, and stress during the early school day. In order to counter the harmful effects of sleep deprivation, school start times should be delayed so that teenagers are well rested and ready to focus in class. Teenagers are negatively impacted when consistently receiving a lack of sleep, especially in relation to school. According to Noland, Price, Dake, and Telljohann’s (2009) study on adolescent sleep behavior, teenagers need more sleep as the “majority of the participants indicated that not getting enough sleep had the following effects on them: being more tired during the day (93.7%), having difficulty paying attention (83.6%), lower grades (60.8%), increase in stress (59.0%), and having difficulty getting along with others (57.7%)” (p. 227).
These are hardworking individuals who cannot afford healthcare insurance. These are individuals who may have lost their coverage at work or have pre-existing conditions that prevent them from obtaining insurance. These are parents who are “spending too many sleepless nights worrying about their kids getting sick and how they'll pay for needed healthcare” (Miller 4). These individuals sit up and night and wonder how anyone “in this wealthy country should have to make those kinds of decisions. Too many Americans are forced into bankruptcy due to high out-of-pocket medical care expenses” (Miller 3).
Moreover, the effects will be cumulative, so a mild reduction in sleep per night can be after a period of time, result in significant functional deficits. There is increasing evidence that sleep deprivation has detrimental effects on the immune response, indicating that sleep should be considered a vital part of the immune system and that there is a mutual relationship between sleep and immunity. This relationship is important because over recent decades, there has been a decreasing in the mean duration and quality of sleep in the population. The concept that lack of sleep might be compromised immunity in the population has far-reaching public-health implications for both individuals and society.
Pilcher, Ginter and Sadowsky (1997) found that sleep quality was more important than sleep quantity, implying that there is no set amount of sleep that is adequate but rather, it is essential to ensure the sleep you get is of a certain quality. Anxiety is defined as apprehension over an anticipated problem. Anxiety should be differentiated from fear as fear tends to be about a threat that is happening now while anxiety on the other hand tends to be caused by a perceived future threat (Kring, Johnson, Davison and Neale, 2010). Research indicates that anxiety harms the human body and may contribute significantly to coronary heart disease ( Gadberry, 2011). Anxiety is made up of two components; Trait anxiety and State anxiety.
Why does long flights sometimes cause us to feel increasingly tired? The answer lies within our circadian rhythm. The circadian sleep-waking rhythm is known as the internal body clock of humans and it is believed that there is a correlation between secretion of melatonin and the circadian rhythm. Melatonin is the hormone responsible for inducing sleep. Without melatonin, we would have severe insomnia and various negatives effects in behavior can be seen.
There are many factors which may distract concentration amongst teenagers, some of them are: 1. Fatigue: most of today’s teenagers prefer a different kind of lifestyle which includes partying with friends and involving other activities which hampers adequate sleep. Sleep deprivation is probably the most common cause for the inability to concentrate on one topic for very long. Many studies have shown that students are not getting enough sleep and sleep deprivation has serious physical, emotional and cognitive effects. 2.
These two sleep disorders are the topics I am going to cover, and what causes each. Stress and anxiety are two main causes for multiple sleep disorders, but they are also the effect. Stress can negatively impact a person emotionally, physically, and behaviorally, and can create tension, anxiety, and problems with sleep. Having too much to do, with what seems to be too little of time, such as, trying to balance school, work, relationships, and hobbies, can cause an excessive amount of stress. Not knowing how to balance and manage time is an issue many people face.
The two factors are, how sleep deprivation affects the teenagers’ academic performance and what kind of health related issues. There are two principal symptoms that signify lack of sleep in teenagers involve less motivation in doing works and changes in mood, resulting in emotional and behavior complications (Dahl RE, 1999). Nowadays teenagers sacrifice their sleep to fulfill their social needs hoping that this will not cause any negative effects on them. Unfortunately that is totally wrong and sleep deprivation has several negative effects on teenagers’ academic performance. Most importantly the health of the teenagers have to be taken into consideration.
Many students are sleep deprived and don’t understand the importance of a good night’s rest. Between the lack of sleep and stress of college life students don’t know where to turn for relief. Instead of finding natural stress relieving exercises, more and more students are becoming dependent on drugs to get through life. They believe that these drugs are helping them but in reality they are harming themselves in more ways than one. Drug abuse is extremely destructive to a student’s education, health, and finances.
