Liz Gomez English 101 Mr. Tafarella 3/9/11 On Monday of last week I woke up with the biggest headache ever and believe me I was not ready to go to class but I really didn’t want to miss the video that Mr. Tafarella was going to show us, so I got up, got ready and decided I had nothing to lose and I went to class. Once at school we had a lot of trouble trying to get the video to work and finally there it was; the most interesting subject I could have ever come across “Jonestown” To tell you the truth at first I was a little bit confused because I had never heard of this story, but once the documentary got going I was not able to take my eyes off of it. After the documentary ended I realized I wanted to know even more. I mean, I couldn’t believe that Jim Jones had been able to do such thing in such dimension and no one was able to stop him. This was the main reason why I decided to go out and do a lot of research on this subject. I’m going to start off by telling you a little bit of what I learned by watching the video: The peoples Temple was formed in Indianapolis, Indiana during the 1950s, by a person named Jim Jones. It purported to practice what its also called “apostolic socialism”, in doing so the Temple preached to established members “those who remained drugged with opiate of religion had to be brought to enlightenment also called socialism” After Jones received considerable criticism from the people of Indiana from his Integrationist views, the temple moved to Redwood Valley, California in 1965. Five years later, the peoples Temple opened other branches in California including Los Angeles and San Francisco. In the mid 70’s the Temple moved its headquarters to San Francisco. By doing so the Temple became really famous and more politically active, it was because of the Peoples Temple participation that George Moscone won the mayoral election in
