I-SEARCH As a little girl, I knew that being a lawyer was something I wanted to be as an adult. To me it was like they ruled the world. It was a way to make a change in the world in someway. Like putting bad guys in jail and keeping families together. As I got older I have learned that there was more to being a lawyer than what my imagination had led me. WHAT I DIDN’T KNOW ABOUT THE CAREER I HAVE CHOSEN About the only thing I didn’t know was the amount of money that could be earned starting out. The yearly earnings range from Average Annual Wage $112,382, Entry Annual Wage $51,043, Experienced Annual Wage $143,042, Entry Hourly Wage $24.54 Experienced Hourly Wage $68.77, and Average Hourly Wage $54.03. All of this is based in Florida only. WHAT I HAVE LEARNED ABOUT THE CAREER I HAVE CHOSEN Lawyers conducts criminal and civil lawsuits, prepares legal documents, advises clients on legal rights, and practices other phases of law. May represent clients in court or before administrative agencies of government. May specialize in a single area of law, such as constitutional law, corporate law, or criminal law. Examples of what a person in this career does: Advises clients about business transactions, claim liability, advisability of lawsuits, and legal rights and obligations. Presents cases in court and summarizes cases to a judge or jury. Develops strategies and arguments in the preparation of a case. Interviews clients and witnesses to get facts and gather evidence for defense or legal action. Interprets laws, rulings, and regulations for individuals and businesses. Acts as agent, trustee, guardian, or executor for businesses or individuals. Prepares and drafts legal documents, such as wills, deeds, patent applications, mortgages, leases, and contracts. Selects jurors, argues motions, meets with judges and questions witnesses during the course
