I Learned From My Mistakes

Dealing with hardship is something that has evolved into a second nature for me and my family. As far as I can remember, my family always struggled financially: My father lost his job when I was 9 years old, and he failed to get a proper job ever since. Though my family has struggled a great deal and is still struggling, my family always stuck by its moral values and an aim to get the best possible education for me and my siblings so we can overcome our problems. I was born in Karachi, Pakistan and I lived there for 15 years, before I moved to the United States in July of 2008. Moving to the United States was not an easy decision, though my mom side of the family lived in the United States, but my parents made this choice solely because they wanted better future for me,my sister, and my brother. Moving to the United States involved one big problem, and that was our financial incapability. But, we got a generous support form two of my maternal uncles who are doctors; they helped us by providing with financial assistance to settle down, and to this day they supplement my dad's yearly income of less than 10,000 dollars to support a family of five (which is well below 25,790 dollars minimum economic index for a family of five set by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services for 2009).Even after all this, my parents remind us children to always keep the goal in mind, that is, to get a best possible education, so we can succeed in life and return the favor back to whoever helped us in our time of need. In Pakistan, it is now like a tradition for all the school going kids to have a tutor because the schooling system in Pakistan is not that great, but I was the only kid in my class who did not have a tutor because of our economic hardships and still managed to get good grades.
