* ------------------------------------------------- Alexis Shelton September 13 2012 * ------------------------------------------------- I Hated Kids Until ….The Worst One Didn’t Challenge me But Changed Me When I taught at a local summer camp to teach children how to play softball I found alot about my self I did not like. I did not came to this epiphany through hours of soul searching or reading a inspirational book. It was through the most annoying self absorbed child I ever met. Anthony was neither a leader nor a role model. In fact, his teachers and his parents were constantly chastising him because he was disruptive, ate too much, and had a hard time staying focused on a task. I met Anthony when I was a coach for a co-ed softball over this summer at a local camp in Oklahoma for my travel softball teams. We were forced into coaching them. Each player had to teach the middle school kids the basic skills just to show them how to be on a team , and Anthony signed up for my class. * ------------------------------------------------- Anthony stood out from my other students for many reasons. He was larger and louder than the other middle school kids. He was also the only African American in the class. The camp was located in a well-to-do and predominately white neighborhood. I questioned if it was effort to promote economic and racial diversity. Anthony was not a good student, he had been kept back a year at his school. He talked out of turn and lost interest when others were talking. In my class, Anthony got some good laughs , I even laughed when he put the softballs into the pitching machine and started shooting it at kids. His glove never made it to the sand because his huge sausages like fingers did not really fit just right so he crumpled it in a fit of frustration. In the final week, I felt that it was safe to bring out the bats to practices
