Professor Epstein Human Communications February 2014 “I AM” Aldous Huxley once stated, “There’s only one corner of the universe you can be certain of improving, and that’s your own self”. The only thing you can be positive to improve is yourself. What we tell others about ourselves says a lot about who we think we are and the images we want others to believe about us. For this assignment, I was asked to find out how two other people perceive me and compare and contrast their perceptions with my own. By doing so, in class with ripped apart twenty adjectives and placed them into categories of which I felt they fit most appropriately. Than I had to think of two other people who know me well but have differing vantage points in my life so they could put the twenty adjectives into categories that fit me best. I figured it would be best to ask my mother and my boyfriend because they know me best. After getting the results I discussed with both why they chose to put the adjectives in the categories they did. I have than put the information together to set up a data chart to help me compare the similarities and differences with how they perceive me and how I perceive myself. This helped me make the connections between self-concept and perception. How one perceives themselves will always differ from how others see them. Self- concept is our perceived self, which consists of an organized groups of beliefs and attitudes about oneself. Self- concept consists of two important elements: self-image, which is how we see ourselves or a mental picture of self, and self-esteem, our feelings and attitudes towards ourselves or how we evaluate ourselves. Self-image and self- esteem, both make up what self- concept is. Self- concept and perception are closely related. Our interactions and experiences with others determine how we perceive ourselves.
