Hysterectomy A hysterectomy is the surgical removal of the uterus with or without the removal of the ovaries. The uterus is located inside the pelvis. The human uterus is pear-shaped and about 7.6 cm long (channel). The uterus can be divided anatomically into four segments: The fundus, corpus, cervix and the internal orifice. In Australia around 30,000 women undergo the operation yearly. In the past, the most common hysterectomy was done by an incision through the abdomen. But now with modern technology most surgeries can use laparoscopic assisted or vaginal hysterectomies, which are performed through the vagina rather than an incision through the abdomen, this makes for a quicker and easier recovery. (Suzanne R Trupin) Possible complications of hysterectomy include: * Difficulties with urination * Constant pelvic pain * Psychological distress After a Hysterectomy the body won’t be able to go through menstruation, the women will be infertile. Due to the fact that the uterus has been removed it can send the body into shock, this can cause some Psychological distress to the patient. When the a hysterectomy is performed it will automatically make the patient undergo menopause early if they have not already gone through it, but if the patient has already undergone menopause then it won’t re-happen. (channel) The conditions that may be treated by a hysterectomy may be heavy or irregular menstrual periods, server period pain or dysmenorrhoea can cause cancer of the cervix, uterus or ovaries, pelvic inflammatory disease, caused by bacterial infection.
