Hydro Power The hydropower is a renewable energy source; we can use it as long as the water cycle continues. The hydropower has been used for centuries; in some of the countries, such as Mesopotamia, ancient Egypt, Persia, ancient China, India, Imperial Rome, and others, in the past waterpower was use for irrigation, water clocks, waterwheels and mills, Hydraulic power pipes, and Compressed air hydro. It helped to produce flour from grain, saw timber and stone, extract metal, lead, and tin ores, transport barge traffic up and down steep hills, and for other things. The hydropower works by opening the water intakes, which release the water (that is trapped behind the dam or reservoir), from a large drop; when it falls trough the penstock (inside the dam), the propeller, which is at the end of it [the propeller], stars moving by the flowing water; the shaft of the turbine is connected to the generator, so when the turbines move, the generator produces the power, which goes to the power lines, and it carries the electricity to the homes. The water passes the propeller, and goes to the river. The electricity generated by the hydro power plants, is used for almost all the things that surround us. The hydro power has its disadvantage and advantage. The hydropower dams cause several environmental issues. The damming rivers can alter wildlife habitats and river systems permanently. Fish may not be able to swim upstream; it has reduced salmon population. Hydro plants operations may affect the quality of water also. It may mix dissolved metals that were deposited by industries, long time ago. Also, it may increase silting, lower the levels of dissolved oxygen, and change water temperatures. Some of these problems have their solutions. They can build damns with fish ladders, so fishes could go upstream. They can dredge the silt, and regulate the plant operations. Hydro
