Book Review on the Hunger Games The title of this novel is The Hunger Games written by Suzanne Collins and is a young-adult science fiction. The Hunger Games is a series of books about a 16 year old girl named Katniss who lives in district 12, the mining region, the poorest district of Panem, in America. Every year there is an event called ‘the hunger games’ which is held in the capitol of Panem, each of the 12 districts must come forward with one boy and one girl chosen at random between the age of 12 and 18. ‘The Hunger Games’ is set in a different arena each year and the 24 competitors who were chosen are to fight to the death on national television until there is one person left standing. The main character Katniss Everdeen lives with her mother and sister, Prim, she hunts everyday to provide food for her family who are very poor. Her father died when she was 11 in a mine explosion, this tore their family apart as he was the one who supplied them with money and food. Gale Hawthorne is Katniss’ best friend and her hunting buddy, everyday they hunt while talking about their families and life. Everything changes when Prim, Katniss’ younger sister is chosen to participate in the hunger games, Katniss, fearing for her younger sibling decides the take Prim’s place in the hunger games, meaning for her almost certain death. To her surprise the boy chosen from district 12 is Peeta Mellark, the baker’s son, he once gave her a loaf of bread when she was in a time of need, for that Katniss feels she owes him, and hates that feeling. During the hunger games Katniss and Peeta become allies and a romance begins to blossom. Katniss finds out that Peeta has loved her since their first day of school; she doesn’t know whether she feels the same way but keeps the act going for the TV audience.
