Human Resource Management Overview What is human resource management? According to Susan Heathfield, Human Resource Management is the function within an organization that focuses on recruitment of, management of, and providing direction for the people who work in the performed by line managers (Heathfield, 2011). The human resource management (HRM) plays a vital role in the success of the company. The HRM department improves the overall performance by improving employees’ performance as well as training and providing opportunities to be more effective and productive. HRM oversees salaries and wages, employee relations, hiring, training, retention, safety, and employee morale. A human resource manager must consistently remain informed of industry standards involving employee/ employer relationship management. As these environments change it is the responsibility of the human resource manager to help implement these changes in the workplace. This ensures that the business is compliant in state and federal regulations and also helps mitigate unforeseen risk. Sometimes changes in employment laws will require human resource managers and supporting staff to learning new software applications that assist in personnel file management and new hire applications. Understanding of implications of technology, globalization, workforce diversity, changing skill requirements, labor shortages, constant improvement initiatives, decentralized work site, the contingent workforce, and employee involvement is imperative for human resource managers (DeCenzo & Robbins, 2007). HRM can be viewed as the support function in the company; however HRM is not only the responsibility of the HRM department but of line managers too.
