Chap 1 Case 2 Discussion Questions 1. What functions of HRM are similar to marketing functions? How can thinking about marketing a company’s jobs improve the strategic focus of human resources personnel? Two basic HRM Functions are selecting and appraising workers which can be similarly equal to segmenting customers and pricing products in marketing. Promoting your company as a basic need to fill a job hunt will draw job applicants like McDonald’s draw children in its kid’s meal promotions. The Human Resource department under Mr. Singh became talent prospectors who promoted all the benefits a prospective employee can enjoy by becoming part of Royal Dutch Shell. A strong company brand should be one that clearly communicates the culture of your company, its mission and its values, giving people a compelling reason to want to work for firm and stay with the organization. The company has to build a culture that recognizes their employees as their most important asset and successfully communicate this culture to those outside the company as well thus creating the reputations as a great place to work and attracting top talent to their jobs even before they become vacant. Once a reputation is created, a good brand company will have an easier time recruiting qualified candidates, because candidates come in already understanding what the company stands for as an employer. It also helps attract candidates who are not actively looking to change jobs but would consider a good opportunity if it came their way plus candidates would more likely to seek you out to inquire about open positions. You save yourself the time and money because there’s less of a need to advertise open positions and wait for applications to come in. 3. Do you agree with Singh’s statement that in the future, companies will have to apply for skilled people to work for them, rather than candidates applying to work at an organization? Why or why
