Human Development Theories: Jean Piaget’s Theory of Cognitive Development Debbie Slusher Psychology – PSY101 October 22, 2010 Jean Piaget’s Theory of Cognitive Development Jean Piaget was born in Switzerland, received his Doctorate at the age of 22. Piaget took an interest in the development of children. He came to the conclusion that children thought differently from adults in their infant/adolescent year, not less intelligently. “Intelligence is the basic mechanism of ensuring equilibrium in the relations between the person and the environment. This is achieved through the actions of the developing person on the world” (Cherry, 2010). Piaget created a theory of cognitive development of children, which breaks down into four different stages: Sensorimotor Stage Preoperational Stage Concrete Operational Stage Formal Operations Stage Piaget’s notion that infants were born with schemes beginning at birth called “reflexes”. Infants begin to use these reflexes to adapt to their environments, and then the schemes are replaced with more constructed schemes. Apart of Piaget’s theory was that what a child processes at a early age are based on actions then as the child gets older the processes later turn to mental operations. Piaget called these processes Assimilation and Accommodation. “Assimilation refers to using existing mental patterns in new situations. Accommodation is existing ideas are modified to fit new requirements” (Mitterer, 2011, 2008). Each of these processes is used throughout life as a child adapts progressively more to their environment in a more intricate method.
