OL 211 - HR’s Relationship to the Mission - IKEA Southern New Hampshire University Ingvar Kamprad started his own business in 1943 in Agunnaryd, Sweden with money his father gave him for graduation. The name of the company, IKEA, was formed when Ingvar combined the initials in his name with the initial of his hometown farm, Elmtaryd, and village, Agunnaryd. His first product line included items such as pens, picture frames, table runners and jewelry door-to-door. In 1953 the first retail store opened in Älmhul, Sweden and by 1985 had made it’s way to Philadelphia, PA to open it’s first retail store stateside. The overarching mission statement for IKEA is short and to the point but it dreams big,“Our vision is to create a better everyday life for the many people”. It’s vision and values, or it’s business idea as they describe it, makes that mission seem attainable by “Offering a wide range of well-designed, functional home furnishing products at prices so low that as many people as possible will be able to afford them”. A mission statement is defined as a formal summary of the aims and values of a company, organization, or individual. It plays a role in defining goals, ethics, culture, norms for decision making, and is an important component of the strategic plan. IKEA’s mission is lofty and ambitious and gives a deep insight into the kind of person Ingvar Kamprad is and who he wants the employees of his company to be. Ingvar Kamprad understands that people matter. All people. The company’s vision is a strong concept that goes on to detail how IKEA fits into this mission and what part it plays in creating this better life. There are three key dimensions to how IKEA believes it can achieve it’s goals. It’s products need to have good form, good function, and low price.
