Summary This case study discussed Randy Mott’s previous experience as a Chief Information Officer of Walmart and Dell which paved the way to his role at HP as CIO. A CIO’s focus is to help an organization reach its goals by managing all the firms IS operations. This might include ensuring the systems line up with the corporate goals and strategies, defining what systems to invest in and managing all aspects of IS operations within a firm. Randy Mott had an extensive background running large companies and was recruited by HP from Dell in 2005. Mott quickly assessed the business needs of HP and started to consolidate, simplify and downsize the IT department. With his strategic leadership HP’s IT department became more streamlined, much cheaper to run and overall was on a path to become much more efficient. What advantages over its competition did HP achieve by taking on Randy Mott as CIO? Randy Mott worked for Dell which was a large competitor for HP which meant Mott had knowledge of Dells strategic plans. Mott also had such extensive experience as a CIO with large firms and in was in the same field the 5 years prior to joining HP which made him the ideal person to take over. What types of professional skills do you think are required of a good CIO? A good CIO needs to have the insight to look at a company and see what it should focus on and be able to successfully implement the strategic goals that are decided upon. In large firms there often are too many goals and focusing on the key ones that will truly make the biggest impact sometimes aren’t easy to do. This often can lead to restructuring and/or headcount reduction which aren’t easy decision to make but can be critical to the success of a firm.
