He reminisced about the lake and the serenity it offered him and other campers when he was a child. This “holy spot” has then become a traditional summer vacation for him and his family. After settling down in a camp, White realizes everything was left the same since his last visit to the lake. “I could tell it was going to be pretty much the same as it had been left before -- I knew it, lying in bed for the first morning, smelling the bedroom and hearing the boy sneak quietly out and go off along the shore in a boat. I began to sustain the illusion that he was I, and therefore, by simple transposition, that I was in my father.” By engaging in simple activities such as picking up boxes or laying down a table fork, White feels he is living a dual existence.
In Alice Walker’s “Everyday Use” the use of symbolism is an effective tactic. The most obvious symbol is the two quilts, which the central characters Dee and Maggie both want as their own. The narrator, who is also Dee and Maggie’s mother, has an interesting dilemma on her hands. She must choose which daughter is deserving of inheriting the two quilts. The two quilts were pieced together by Grandma Dee and Big Dee, the narrator’s mother and sister, and made with the scraps from the dresses of Grandma Dee and bits and pieces of Grandpa Jarrell’s shirts and Great Grandpa Ezra’s faded blue piece from the uniform he wore in the Civil War.
The smell of the water and the warmth that touched my skin, when the sun peeked through the clouds, took me back in time to the campground. I could see it so clearly in my mind, I felt like I was there. I sat still, just enjoying the moment. Visiting Halifax was a whole new experience. One second I felt like I went back in time to the 50’s, and the next second I felt like I was back 10 years, camping with my family.
When preparing for the Centennial Celebration, Joey is forced to wear Grandpa Dowdels wedding tuxedo. When he first sees the outfit, he says that he will “look like a horse's patootie.” These specific examples help the reader understand the characters personality. Richard Peck uses many phrases including sarcasm. This type of humor really gives the reader a closer look on Grandma because she
Primarily, people were believed to be born into sin and would have to live as a puritan to cleanse themselves. With that said, women would have to attended to the house work, watching the children, and being man’s servant as an obedient wife. These are roles they had to perform to stay pure. Also women would have to attend church regular. Abigail Williams, an orphan in the story, would work as a housekeeper to assist Elizabeth Proctor.
Historian Alan Gordon begins an informative essay on Jacques Cartier, the “Discoverer of Canada,” with the intriguing statement that this sixteenth century French explorer was “really a nineteenth-century figure”[1]. The author then proceeds to explain this extraordinary statement by describing how Cartier was virtually unknown to Canadians prior to the nineteenth century, which is when Cartier himself was “discovered,” so to speak, by the historians of that era. After a rather exhaustive introduction, Gordon states his premise quite deep in to the essay, which is that he “...will attempt to show how historical heroes are used for political ends”[2]. This is an evocative approach, which Gordon
Warmly greeting both Max and Kim by name on arrival and making eye contact followed by a smile will ensure that the he knows you’re friendly. If possible, encourage Kim to remain at the centre with Max for a period of time each morning, sharing activities with him and you. As Max feels more comfortable at the centre over time, the time periods that his mother stays, could be reduced. Make sure that the separation of Max and Kim is unhurried and relaxed. Be enthusiastic, bend down to address Max face to face and let him know who you are; share information about your life ,seek activities that you know Max enjoys and participate in these with him i.e.
Zach Hicks 20th Century American Literature Character Analysis 11 July 2013 Mama in Everyday Use Everyday Use by Alice Walker is story of heritage, ancestry, and true meaning behind them. In fact, Walker even dedicated her short story "for your grandmama" (Walker 1). The narrator, a big-boned woman, known simply as Mama, seems to be more at home on a large farm, seeing to all of its responsibilities, instead of in the house, cooking or reading. The story's main focus is on the confrontation between Mama, whose identity and character is rooted in a deep appreciation of her heritage, and her daughter, Dee, who felt the need to join the Nation of Islam in order to get in touch with her roots. In addition, throughout the story, the reader gets to know Mama as a self-aware and self-accepting woman who is quite frank about those around her.
I remembered that you are Native American--while I cannot boast that myself, my father's family has had a long and happy relationship with many Native American peoples over the years so my folks raised us to respect the traditions, perogatives, and rights of First Peoples. I think it is fantastic that you could participate in such an important event! How did it go?! Sure, it's always best to let me know ahead of time, that way we can plan things, but I'm more than happy to give you some extra time. Let me know what you think will work best for you--my only concern is that you not get too far behind.
Question 3a Question 3b From the above project network, five possible paths found in that project as below table: Path number Path Details Time required (Per Week) 1 A > B > E > I 3 + 2 + 6 + 3 = 14 2 A > C > F > G > I 3 + 4 + 6 + 2 + 3 = 18 3 A > D > F > G > I 3 + 4 + 6 + 2 + 3 = 18 4 A > D > G > I 3 + 4 + 2 + 3 = 12 5 A > D > H > I 3 + 4 + 3 + 3 = 13 As the duration of path 2(ACFGI) and 3(ADFGI) need 18 weeks to complete the project which is longest time, so the path 2 and 3 are critical path. Question 3c As the activity B does not located on critical path, therefore the completion time no change even its shorten one week. For the activity G which is located on both critical path 2(ACFGI) and 3(ADFGI), therefore it is key activity for the project and has to shorten. Due to activity C and D is location on critical path 2(ACFGI) and 3(ADFGI) respectively, if only shorten activity C or D then another one become critical path, therefore both activity C and D have to shorten one week at same time. Conclusion, I would choose activity C, D and G to shorten the completion time as above reasons.
