Crohn’s Disease Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) includes many categories, but two particular illnesses are Ulcerative Colitis and, a more severe, Crohn’s Disease. The more commonly known disease, Crohns, is seriously unacknowledged in the severity except by doctors and patients with Crohns. Crohn’s disease is a growing problem in humanity. Crohn’s is a painful, incurable, lifelong disease that can affect anyone; although, Crohns is not usually terminal if identified and properly addressed. By definition, “Crohn’s disease is a chronic (ongoing) disorder that causes inflammation of the digestive or gastrointestinal (GI) tract. Due to the many symptoms and growth problems caused by Crohns, children at school may not have the motivation or self-esteem to participate in everyday activities. Often children and adults with Crohns do not have the energy to join athletics. If doctors can discover Crohn’s disease in children quickly enough and put them on proper medication, the child has a higher chance to develop like a normal child. Child treatment is decided by a physician and is based on the child’s age, overall health, medical history, the progress of the child’s disease, and the amount of medication or procedures the child can take. (Crohn’s Disease Resource). When a patient has Crohn’s disease they have to take a large number of medications. Cortisone, or the generic name Prednisone, is taken in heavy doses during a large flare to make the disease manageable. If the patient is not experiencing extreme flares, steroids are used to maintain that time. Anti-inflammation drugs, which maintain control of Crohns—Sulfasalazine is the most popular—and Remicade, an inflammation blocker, are also used. Caffeine is not good for Crohn’s disease patients nor is any sort of stimulant drugs. Any kind of raw vegetable or fruit can be harmful because of the acidic juices; seeds and nuts also irritate ulcers as they pass through the body. (CCFA) There are also some foods that can benefit people with Crohn’s disease. Doctors recommend taking slippery elm in the form of tea and to take enteric-coated capsules to relieve camping. Doctors also recommend breathing exercises and psychotherapy for emotional problems. (Weil p. 3) Crohns is not usually terminal if identified and properly addressed. If someone develops Crohn’s disease they must listen to their doctors. Patients must take the drugs and supplements in order to live a relatively normal life. Also, avoid the types of food that could set of flare, which may not be the same for every patient. People can live normal lives—grow up, graduate, marry, have a family—if they follow the instructions given to them. With some hope a cure will be found and people with Crohn’s disease, Ulcerative Colitis and other inflammatory bowel diseases can live free of
