Bicycle Skills: How To Ride A Bike Not only being a great way to exercise, get around efficiently, and perform acrobatic stunts, riding a bike is something almost everyone knows how to do. Saying “everyone” is a bit of an exaggeration however, for there ARE individuals that do not know the basics or have ever even ridden before. Thankfully, for any of those select few that have not obtained these skills yet, I am going to go describe in the best way possible that I know, how to ride a bike. Hopefully this will help the populace enjoy the breeze through their hair, and the wonderful enjoyment of riding a bike. To begin, you’re going to want to pick out a good starter bike. This is usually a “beach cruiser” style bike with only one gear. Being that it is most likely your first time, you’ll want to put on some elbow pads, knee pads, and a helmet for safety just incase you fall. If you do, it’s perfectly fine! Most people fall when they are first learning. Once you have your riding gear, go ahead and put everything on. Make sure that you have a friend with you and a nice open place to ride with minimal cars, mailboxes, or trees around. Once you feel you are ready to give it a go, get on the bike and get a quick feel of your balance. You don’t want to lean too far to one side otherwise you will probably fall off. Now that you’ve done that, you’re ready for your first attempt. Have your friend place his or her hand on the back of the seat and the other on the end of the handle bars. They are going to help you keep your balance while you start obtaining momentum. To start moving forward, give a light push forward off the ground while sitting on the seat and slowly begin peddling the bike. Try not to jerk the handle bars to much as this will cause you to swerve and most likely fall off. Once you get going a little faster, you will begin to achieve that balance point
